(July 27, 2021) Garrett County women’s and voting organizations will hold their Women’s Equality Day Celebration 2021 on Saturday August 28, 2021 at Sang Run State Park. Festivities will include live monologues featuring Maryland suffragists, photo ops, tours of the restored Sang Run Election House, family fun and food sales.
Two historic buildings in the park, the Election House and Friends Store, recall the history of the tiny village of Sang Run. Monologues will take place on the porch of the Friends Store. Visitors can also tour the recently-restored Election House, which is the oldest standing polling place of its type in Maryland. The one-room building was a community center in its time and a fitting place to observe the centennial of women’s right to vote. (The 19th amendment passed in 1920. The centennial observance was postponed until this year because of the COVID 19 pandemic.)
The event runs from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Sang Run State Park is located at 3735 Sang Run Road in McHenry.
