(March 28, 2024) Liriodendron, a historic mansion located in Bel Air, will host several events and an exhibition during April that recall valiant Maryland women who fought for voting rights.
- Visitors can view Liriodendron’s Votes for Women exhibit during the mansion’s open hours throughout April. The exhibit was inspired by the campaign for women’s suffrage in the United States, the 100th anniversary of the final pushes in the Senate for the 19th Amendment, and the national ratification of women’s right to vote. Votes for Women will be on view on Wednesdays from 1 to 6 pm in April, and on Sunday, April 14 from 10 am to 2 pm. The exhibit will also be available during public-facing events and by appointment. Porch Talks, scheduled for Thursday April 18 at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday April 21 at 1:00 p.m. will feature members of the League of Women Voters as they share the history of Women’s Suffrage in Maryland and the fight for women’s rights through the decades. Ticket are $5.00.
Porch Talks will be held outdoors, weather permitting. Light refreshments will be provided. Voter registration forms will be available. Porch Talks are made possible in part by support from Harford County, the Maryland League of Women Voters, and the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center.
- Historians have recently found that Dr. Howard Kelly, who built Liriodendron as a summer respite for his family, was also active in the suffrage movement, along with his sister Dora Kelly Lewis. Suffrage: A Family Affair? will take place on Wednesday April 10 at 5:30 p.m. Dr. Amy Rosenkrans, MWHC board member, will share this story.
